Allison Goes to the Outer Banks

My family has been travelling from Maine to the Outer Banks, North Carolina for the past 17 years. We used to go every April, for two weeks, during April vacation week and the week after. After I graduated High School, I was not able to go on this trip during my four years of college, because taking unscheduled time off during a semester is basically impossible. So this year, my family moved the trip to after my graduation, allowing me to come along for the first time in four years.

For those who don’t know, the Outer Banks is a small strip of land off the coast of North Carolina, like an overgrown sandbar. It is a truly beautiful place. The legendary pirate Blackbeard used the Outer Banks as his “home base”. The Wright Brothers conducted the first airplane flight here, the tallest light house in the United States is here, Wicked Tuna films one of their shows here, and there are wild horses that still roam the beaches (see the pictures in the gallery above as evidence). Along with all of these things, this strip of land is also home to some amazing food.

Duck Donuts

Duck, North Carolina

Now, I know I talk about donuts very often on this blog but, if you think about it, donuts deserve to be talked about like all the time.

Duck Donuts is very different from a lot of donut shops featured on my page. So how this place works: You walk into the store and see all of their shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, etc. for sale. On a little counter to the side are menus for you to fill out your order. You pick how many donuts you want and then what kinds. You can pick from customer favorite combinations or create your own meaning you pick the toppings and glazes. Most often, I create my own. After you have picked how many donuts and what kinds, you go to the cashier to pay. Then the fun part happens. You walk to the building next door and can actually see your donuts go into the fryer, being hand decorated exactly to your order, put into a box and given to you. The donuts are so fresh, they are still warm when they are given to you, which really adds to the experience. If you have ever eaten a warm, fresh donut you know the feeling and what I am talking about. These donuts, hands-down, are some of the best you will ever consume.

Some of my favorite combinations to get here are: Maple Coconut, Chocolate with Peanuts, and Peanut Butter with Bacon.

Kill Devil Grill

Kitty Hawk, North Carolina

This restaurant didn’t get on our radar until my family was watching an episode of Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on the Food Network.

Fried Chicken Salad, Kill Devil Grill

Kill Devil Grill has such a happy atmosphere. The staff here are so nice and eager to help each other out. This, in my opinion, makes the fact that they have incredible food even better. This place is very popular, people line up at the door before opening, especially on Fridays when they have their fried chicken special.

One of the most delicious items on the menu it the Backyard Wings. They’re grilled wings covered in a delicious secret sauce that is a perfect level of spicy. The waitress puts these wings down on the table and they have disappeared within five minutes.

Grilled Chicken Sandwich with a side of Hush Puppies, Mulligan’s

My family has been eating at this restaurant for as long as I can remember. We started going to the Outer Banks during their Bike Week, when my dad was big into motorcycles. Mulligan’s always had events going on for Bike Week, so that is how we first came to this restaurant. Mulligan’s is also across the street from Jockey’s Ridge, a state park and the largest active sand dune system in the United States.

Mulligan’s has great burgers but my favorite item on their menu is the hush puppies. Hush puppies are a very southern thing. They’re deep friend cornmeal balls served with butter and they are like the best thing you will ever put in your mouth. Definitely a must try!

Village Table & Tavern

Onion Dip with house made chips, Village Table & Tavern

This restaurant just opened this year. It is beautiful inside, wonderfully decorated. The restaurant sits right on the sound so you get a lovely view of the water. Coming here for dinner, around the time of a sunset would be magical. I went for lunch so I didn’t get to see the sunset, but I know from my experiences that sunsets over the sound are some of the most gorgeous sunsets you will ever see.

The food is just as beautiful as you would have expected from a beautifully decorated restaurant. For an appetizer, we got a caramelized onion dip that was served with house made chips. I didn’t really know what to expect from this dish, but holy cow it blew my mind. It was super creamy and rich, the onions were cooked perfectly, the chips added a nice salty aspect to it. Just all around a great starter. For my actual meal, I got a southern fried chicken sandwich. The chicken was fried to a beautiful golden brown and the chicken was still juicy and delicious. I am already excited for next summer, when we go again, so I can eat more food here.

The Black Pelican

Kitty Hawk, North Carolina

The Black Pelican is another restaurant that we found thanks to Guy Fieri and the Food Network. Every year, we would always say that we would go eat here but it never worked out until this last trip.

Man oh Man, were we missing out!

Chicken and Ribs, The Black Pelican

My meal here was chicken and ribs. I couldn’t decide which I wanted, so I got a dish that would give me both! The chicken was cooked perfectly and I also got to eat some ribs that were super yummy, served with just the right amount of barbecue sauce. This plate also came served with a corn salad and fried okra. This was my first time eating okra. I thought it was really delicious and I would definitely eat it again.

This restaurant is also historically significant. The building, built in 1874, was formerly a lifesaving station for the North Carolina coast, saving many people’s lives over the years.

Sunset Ice Cream

Duck, North Carolina

Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream, Sunset Ice Cream

This is a cute little ice cream shop on the sound-side boardwalk in Duck. My family likes to walk on the board walk to watch the sunset, and we almost often do that with an ice cream in hand from Sunset Ice Cream. They have your basic ice cream flavors, which are always yummy to eat. My favorite is their peanut butter cup, which is chocolate ice cream and peanut butter cups mixed together.
